EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced candidates to fill the vacant post of Executive Director at the Story Workshop Educational Trust (SWET) tenable at its head office in Blantyre.
The organization
Story Workshop Educational Trust (SWET) is a leading local, independent, non-profit and non-partisan development media Non- Governmental Organization (NGO) that has been operational in Malawi since 1997. It exists to facilitate Social and Behaviour Change through research-based Creative Media, Social and Community Mobilization, Advocacy and Networking in Malawi. For the past 26 years, the context in which Story Workshop has been working has greatly shifted. It is against this background that SWET would like to hire the Executive Director to lead the organization in line with its strategic plans.
The Job
The Executive Director shall be the Chief Executive Officer and Head of the organization overseeing the operations of the organization. He or she will be responsible to the Board of Trustees for the efficient management of the Trust. He or she shall provide leadership, advice and guidance on daily operations; implement policy and overall strategic direction of the Trust.
Responsibilities:
Key responsibilities of the Executive Director shall, among others be:
1. Ensuring proper administration of the Trust in accordance with policies and regulations determined by the Board of Trustees;
2. Formulating short-, medium- and long-term strategic plans of the Trust;
3. Taking a leading role in budgeting and budget controls;
4. Implementing policies of the Trust;
5. Formulating annual work plans and budgets to the Board of Trustees for approval;
6. Preparing, submitting and implementing project proposals to donors and implementing partners;
7. Preparing and submitting annual reports to the Board of Trustees;
8. Implementing corporate strategic and business plans while aligning them to policies of the Trust;
9. Undertaking continuous monitoring and evaluation of operational progress through effective systems and processes to achieve the objectives of the Trust;
10. Ensuring adequate and efficient staffing through sound recruitment, remuneration and retention policies;
11. Facilitating local and international partnerships with institutions working in the same thematic areas and other agencies including the private sector
12. Providing strategic, innovative and creative direction and leadership to the SWET by competitively positioning and representing the organisation nationally and internationally with development strategies
13. Aggressively mobilize resources for the organisation
14. Ensuring that Senior Managers in the organisation are carrying out their business effectively and efficiently
15. Spearheading strategic planning, policy fine-tuning and implementation targeted at making the organisation responsive to the ever changing needs of Malawians Any other lawful duties as assigned by the Board of Trustees from time to time.
Qualifications and Experience:
Applicants must have a minimum of Masters’ Degree in any management discipline from accredited Institutions, with at least ten years’ experience at senior management level.
Those with experience in education, media and project management will have an added advantage.
The preferred candidate must:
1. Have demonstrable leadership and team building skills;
2. Be able to interact with stakeholders and partners (local and international) at the highest level;
3. Must take a leading role in resource mobilization and writing of project proposals;
4. Have demonstrable wide knowledge in managing an organization similar to SWET;
5. Be experienced in results-based management;
6. Be decisive, self-motivated, assertive and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
7. Be computer literate (Sage, Ms Office, Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
8. Be of high integrity and possess excellent negotiation skills;
9. Excellent knowledge and understanding of socio-economic and political context of Malawi;
10. Excellent written and spoken skills in English;
11. Analytical and communication skills, both oral and written;
12. Have no record of involvement in any form of sexual exploitation and abuse.
13. Understanding of the SBCC sector would be an added advantage;
Remuneration
The successful candidate shall be offered a negotiable three- year performance related contract with an attractive salary and benefits commensurate with the seniority of the position and candidate qualifications.
