About the Position
The Research Assistants will support high quality research on fish genetics, and fish genetic improvement programs aimed at improving their farm performance. The research will include fish breed improvement with incorporation of molecular tools and genomic selection, where suitable. The incumbent is expected to work closely with members of the genetics and aquaculture team in collaboration with feed, health and social scientists delivering integrated solutions to accelerate sustainable growth of aquaculture in Africa.
The Research Assistants will also be involved in field activities as well as other administrative tasks around the office and the research station farm and hatchery. Activities will therefore span from data collection, record keeping, egg extraction and incubation, brood stock management and feeding, fingerling production and overall field and on-station research sampling support.
The successful candidate have key responsibilities in the following areas:
- Work with the Pond workers to execute day to day pond and brood stock management activities.
- Manage experiments through established WorldFish protocols and ethics for fish experiments.
- Participate in hands on fish mating and fingerling production activities while maintaining individual fish families.
- Carry out day to day hatchery management activities including hatchery cleaning and sanitizing, egg hatching monitoring and fry nursing.
- Collaborate with the GIP team in Zambia and HQ for skill transfer and development.
- Carrying out day to day activities to ensure the breeding nucleus is sanitary maintained and bio secure.
- Participating in daily collection of all relevant research and production data and provide weekly reports.
- Participate in project team meetings set up by the relevant Malawi and Zambia teams.
- Assisting the team in administrative tasks such as procurement of materials and equipment in relation to GIP as may be assigned to him from time to time.
- Provide daily, weekly and quarterly technical reports of activities undertaken.
- Carrying out other duties as determined by the Project Leadership.

This job might be for you if you have the below skills and qualifications :
- Degree in Aquaculture and Fisheries, a Masters degree in fish breeding and genetics or related aquaculture field is an added advantage.
- At least 3 years’ experience in fish breeding and hatchery management of tilapia.
- Possess strong aquaculture hands on technical skills.
- Ability to think critically, analytically and overcome challenges.
- Able to set priorities, meet deadlines and make timely decisions.
- Relevant hands on working experience in fish handling, sampling and mating of tilapia species.
- Ability to collect and prepare fish tissue samples for laboratory analysis.
- Experience in managing fish experiments including; implementation of feeding protocols, tank management and overall good handling of equipment and facilities.
- Ability to record data and information in a coherent and timely manner to facilitate analysis and interpretation.
- Ability to work with minimum supervision.
Desired Skills and Qualifications
- Proficient in English language both verbal and written.
- Experience working with breeding programs.
- Knowledge in Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.
- Possess some research methods skills and ability to contribute to research concepts and reports.
- Writing and data analysis skills.
- Ability to plan, implement technical programs with minimum supervision
