IFC is seeking two summer interns in the Eastern Africa department (CAEET) as part of our Global Internship Program (GIP). The Global Internship Program (GIP) offers highly motivated individuals an opportunity to be exposed to the mission and work of the IFC and the broader World Bank Group and become part of the largest private sector development institution in the world. The program encourages individuals to bring new perspectives and innovative ideas to IFC’s work while improving skills in a diverse and highly stimulating environment. Moreover, the Global Internship Program provides a unique opportunity to exchange ideas and network with international professionals dedicated to ending extreme poverty and boosting prosperity in the developing world.

The Internship period will be between May 2023– July 2023.

Duties and Accountabilities:  
    • Support Megafarms investment project (Malawi) –working with the local Country Office – Identifying the key investment gaps and key barriers policy/ others) preventing the growth of private sector in the agricultural sector – specifically focusing on supporting market studies around opportunities for large-scale commercial farming in Malawi, detailed analyses of existing operators, and opportunities for scaling up operations
    • Identify areas suitable for irrigated farming and commercial and staple crops that can be grown in the areas
    • Assess the investment needs required to update and/or install irrigation systems in the identified areas
    • Benchmarking current financing options/structures available for such projects from commercial banks in Malawi
    • Identify constraints, including any policy, regulatory, and/or institutional barriers to attracting investment.
    • Working with the Country Office Team (Zambia)– follow up with industry teams on the implementation of identified opportunities developed during a recent idea generation workshop and provide additional market analysis required to ensure appropriateness of these opportunities

Selection Criteria

    • Candidates must be currently enrolled in a Masters’ degree level program with expected graduation date?after December 1st, 2023?in order to be eligible
    • Master’s degree in Finance or Economics
    • At least 3 years of previous work experience
    • Strong research and financial modeling skills
