POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP – 1 POST (TENABLE IN BLANTYRE)

The Malaria Alert Centre (MAC) is a research centre under the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences. The centre works with the Ministry of Health, local and international health agencies, and academic institutions to address priority health problems in Malawi and the SADC region through research, capacity building and training, disease surveillance, and monitoring and evaluation of interventions in communicable diseases.

MAC is inviting applications from suitably qualified and enthusiastic individuals to fill the position of Post-Doctoral Fellow on a project operating under the International Centre of Excellence for Malaria Research (ICEMR) project. The project seeks to measure the effectiveness of the RTS, S/AS01 malaria vaccine in school aged children when administered alone or in combination with an effective antimalarial drug.

Position summary
The primary responsibilities of the fellow will be to work with international collaborators to set up the study and run it. The administrative office is in Blantyre but the fieldwork will take place in rural areas of southern Malawi with both remote and occasional field supervision required.

Duration of Contract:
The initial contract will be for one year with possibility of further extension based on performance and availability of funding.

Duties and responsibilities

    • Set up, launch and oversee the clinical trial implementation
    • Ensure all trial procedures are developed according to Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
    • Ensure that quality check and quality control procedures are in place for all aspects of the trial, e.g. version control.
    • Develop and maintain on-going interest in the trial among all stakeholders: district staff, primary school teachers, parents, students, community leaders and other interested groups.
    • Prepare progress reports for the Steering and Data Monitoring Committees.
    • Take leading role for any audit, inspection or progress reports as required by regulatory bodies, funder(s) or sponsor(s).
    • Analyze and write up study results
    • Lead in developing scientific manuscripts,
    • Take a lead in developing own career path by developing independent research questions in the context or outside the trial setting.
    • Anticipate and troubleshoot problems that arise during the study.

Required Qualification, Skills and Experience

    • PhD in epidemiology.
    • Experience in clinical trial organization.
    • Those with experience in health research where they led research projects will have an added advantage.
    • Self-starter and a multi-tasker who works with minimal supervision and adheres to agreed timelines.
    • Ability to communicate in a multi-racial team.
    • Willingness to travel and spend time in a rural district.

Remuneration will be commensurate with experience and qualifications as applicable to staff in the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences. KUHES is an equal opportunity employer.
