Partners in Health (PIH) is a non-profit organization based in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, whose mission is to provide a preferential option for the poor in health care. Through service delivery, training, advocacy and research, PIH works globally to bring the benefits of modern science to those most in need and to serve as an antidote to despair. PIH has programs in Haiti, Peru, Mexico, Russia, Rwanda, Lesotho, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Kazakhstan and Boston. Through our partnership with Harvard Medical School and the Brigham and
Women’s Hospital, we support a wide range of programs in dozens of other countries around the world.

PIH began working in Malawi in 2007, where today we support the Ministry of Health (MOH) to serve a catchment area of 165,000 through 12 health centers and two hospitals in partnership with our sister organizations. Partners in Health/Abwenzi Pa Za Umoyo (PIH/APZU) has its headquarters in Neno District with operations across the country.

We therefore seek to recruit suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the following position:

Position : Internal Medicine Specialist
Reports to : Medical Director
Commitment : Full Time (Monday-Friday + minimum one weekend/month)
Working Hours : Regular Office Hours + some nights
Location : Neno District, Malawi

Position Overview
The internal medicine specialist will work collaboratively with APZU and MOH staff to improve the quality of clinical care at PIH-supported sites. He/She will be expected to bring high-level knowledge and skills that will contribute to APZU’s vision to improve the quality of clinical care. This will involve direct patient care, mentorship and capacity building, development and implementation of clinical protocols, medical education, quality improvement projects, and research. The internal medicine specialist will be expected to work with national MOH, academic institutions, other PIH sites and other collaborators.

Responsibilities and Duties

Clinical care

• • Serve as the internal medicine consultant in all APZU-supported facilities
  • Work directly with Ministry of Health (MoH) leadership and APZU clinical leadership to strengthen implementation of internal medicine clinical activities
  • Provide direct patient care in in-patient settings as well as outpatient settings including NCD and advanced HIV care programs.
  • Facilitate the introduction of new and advanced clinical programs in Neno district and other APZU-supported facilities
  • Liaise with other internal medicine specialists locally and internationally, as well as other specialists to manage complex cases within the district or facilitate the transfer to higher-level facilities.
  • Support the design/adaptation and implementation of the national and international clinical guidelines at APZU-supported facilities
  • Offer technical review and support for national and international standards and development of new clinical guidelines as required
  • Other duties as assigned including taking weekend and overnight on-cover-calls as much as possible
    Mentorship, quality improvement and research
  • Provide direct clinical supervision and mentorship to clinical staff including clinical officers and medical officers and other clinical staff in APZU-supported facilities
  • Lead in internal medicine related morbidity and mortality meetings, including the tumor board meetings
  • Develop system implementation and quality improvement projects to improve the quality of care provided to patients.
  • Collaborate with APZU M&E teams and clinical leadership to develop and manage M&E framework related to the care of patients, ensuring integration with existing systems and routine data monitoring by the clinical team
  • Design, implement and disseminate relevant medical research projects

Medical education

• • Lead the development of curriculum, planning and teaching for medical students and other health care workers in APZU-supported facilities
  • Lead collaboration between APZU leadership, national MOH and the Neno DHMT to create a training hub in Neno District to train clinicians and nurses in delivery of high quality care in districts throughout Malawi
  • Support professional development of clinical staff working in internal medicine

Other responsibilities

• • Other leadership duties assigned by APZU management from time to time

Required Qualifications and Experience

• • MMED internal medicine or equivalent
  • Up to date registration with the Medical Council of Malawi
  • Fluent in English and demonstrated proficiency in writing in English.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and ability to quickly learn other technology is required
  • Impeccable communication skills and adept at coordinating communication across multiple stakeholders in high stress environments
  • Ability to work under pressure, handle multiple assignments, prioritize workflow, and meet deadlines
  • Proven skills in managing change, achieving results, ensuring quality, and building capacity
  • Commitment to health, social justice and passion for strengthening the health system in Malawi
  • Willingness to live and work full-time in a rural setting.
