A. Background
As a federal enterprise, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH supports the German Government in achieving its objective in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development. GIZ operates in more than 130 countries around the globe. In Malawi, GIZ has been working for more than 30 years. Malawi is a priority for German international cooperation and currently focuses on three priority areas: education, health and private sector development in rural areas. In addition to our work on these areas, we also work on public financial and economic management and social protection.
GIZ Malawi is implementing Germany’s “One World – No Hunger Initiative” through the “Global Programme: Green Innovation Centres for the Agriculture and Food Sector (GIAE)”. This global programme aims to use innovations in the agricultural and food sector to boost the incomes of smallholders, create more employment opportunities, and to increase regional food supplies in rural areas. To achieve this, the programme works with partners locally and internationally to promote innovation networks in the agricultural and food sector. The programme is partnering with the EU-funded action “KULIMA Promoting Farming in Malawi” for the component “Improving the access to and use of agriculture research innovations by Malawian farmers”.
KULIMA stands for Kutukula Ulimi m’Malawi meaning in the main local language, Chichewa, “promoting farming in Malawi”. The 1st component of the KULIMA project aims at a sustainable increase of productivity and diversification of smallholder farmers based on market demand while the 2nd component aims at increasing income generated by farmer enterprises, including smallholders, and at creating jobs through developing local value addition of agriculture products. The 3rd component aims at stimulating better information supply to the public and Parliament on agricultural policy and its outcomes.
The KULIMA Programme is being co-implemented by Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Consortium made up of Self-Help Africa, the lead NGO, Adventist Development and Relief Association (ADRA) Malawi, Evangelical Association of Malawi (EAM), Action Aid, and Plan Malawi. Within KULIMA, GIZ-GIAE supports component 1 by ensuring the available expertise and relevant innovations and technologies for farmers developed by the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), thus international research centres located in Malawi. SMS from respective Departments of the Ministry of Agriculture, facilitated by GIZ-GIAE, support and conduct the technical training of Master Trainers (MTs) and lead farmers/ CBFs as part of the Farmer Field School approach. GIZ-GIAE promotes suitability of inputs in different agro-ecological zones of Malawi, successful agricultural practices and the application of relevant innovations and technologies in view of addressing in a holistic manner the issues affecting the production systems in Malawi.
