Alliance One Tobacco (Malawi) Ltd is seeking applications for the position of:

SAFETY HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL (SHE) CONTROLLER

Reporting to the Human Resources Director, the successful applicant will be engaged to ensure that the company is safe and compliant with all applicable Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations and guidelines besides promoting safe work practices and awareness amongst employees.

Key responsibilities include:-

• Promotes a culture of safety which can boost morale and improve productivity in the workplace
• Ensures that SHE Risks, impacts & legal requirements are identified, evaluated and corrective actions determined every year
• Coordinates delivery of KPI’s established to drive Safety, Health, Environmental, Risk and Quality (SHERQ)
• Supports Sustainable Tobacco Programme (STP) and International Standards Organisation (ISO) capability in operational lines through training and pillar coordinators to embed STP/ISO in operational arrangements so as to limit operational disruptions but improve productivity
• Ensures familiarisation with ISO standards and policy procedures to determine reporting and data requirements
• Coordinates internal and external audits (customer audits, ISO audits, STP) with local management, customers and other relevant parties
• Participates in stakeholder engagement activities aimed at meeting ISO targets.
• Makes informed considerations for Risk Management or Risk Avoidance by conducting risk assessment and gap analysis relating to STP, ISO
• Coordinates Employee Engagement processes relating to ISO and STP
• Collates, files and reports on GHT Data as a member of the Malawi Green House Gas Team
• Ensures that an Emergency/ Contingency plan is drawn & reviewed every year
• Ensures that SHE documentation and records are maintained through periodic reviews
• Ensures that SHE documentation and records are protected from damage, deterioration or loss all the time
• SHE Management Programmes including training and induction are timely developed, documented and economically implemented.

Qualifications & Experience

• Degree in Social Science/Environment Science/Management/Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
• Relevant experience in an Agro processing or manufacturing environment.
• Those who operate in a certified ISO or NOSA environment may have an added advantage.
• Ability to prioritise and work under pressure in order to meet tight deadlines.
• General People Skills, negotiation skills, social dialogue and experience in resolving conflicts
• Dynamic self-starter with excellent communication skills at all levels.
