Founded in 1987, AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) is a global organization providing cutting-edge medicine and advocacy to over 1, 500, 000 people in 43 countries. In Malawi, AHF is working in partnership with the Ministry of Health (MOH) to strengthen access to quality treatment for HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis (TB) and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI). AHF Malawi is providing these services in twenty five hard to reach health facilities in Dedza, Lilongwe, Ntcheu, Chikwawa and Nsanje Districts.

AHF Malawi wishes to recruit highly qualified and experienced persons to fill the following positions to achieve its objectives in the country.

Laboratory Technician

Position Title: Laboratory Technician
Reports to: Medical Region Officer
Duty Station: Chinsapo Health Facility, Lilongwe (1)

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

• • Participate in planning, overseeing and supervising activities for the laboratory function for an AHF supported facility.
  • Perform basic laboratory tests such as hematology, microbiology, chemistry as well as other tests as required.
  • Oversee laboratory services provision and ensures standard, and current practices are in place for maintaining high quality laboratory services and maximizing the use of all resources.
  • Ensure compliance and implementation of laboratory protocols.
  • Participate in inventory control management for laboratory supplies and reagents under AHF Malawi for supported site.
  • Participate in the implementation of quality control and safety procedures and conduct all laboratory tests in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Manage and ensures safety of AHF laboratory equipment.
  • Ensure all client information is documented accurately on laboratory samples and on accompanying documents.
  • Knowledge of HIV/AIDS and related medical and patient care issues and concerns.
  • Ensure laboratory data obtained is of good quality and is reliable and to assist in the preparation of laboratory reports.
  • Ensure all laboratory results are delivered in time and are recorded in the necessary databases for future reference.
  • Participate in stock management, balancing inventories, stock count and preparation of orders to ensure uninterrupted supplies of consumables.
  • Ensure prevention of medico hazards by complying with biosafety standards and infection control standards.
  • Package and dispatch specimens to referral laboratories.
  • Assume additional responsibilities as necessary (i.e.: attendance at all assigned committees).

Qualifications, Experience, and other attributes

• • Diploma in Biomedical Sciences
  • A minimum of two years’ experience in a busy clinic with similar responsibilities.
  • Experience with hematology and chemistry systems.
  • High analytical skills, quality control and basic knowledge of HIV laboratory monitoring.
  • Must be computer literate.
  • Needs to be sensitive to patient population and issues surrounding HIV/AIDS.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English in a variety of settings.
  • Flexible, proactive, and able to organize work independently as well as work in a team.
