VACANCY: RESEARCH ASSISTANT
USAID ADVANCING NUTRITION
BACKGROUND:
The Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) has received financial support from USAID Advancing Nutrition to undertake a study entitled A Comparison of the Use of Household Consumption and Expenditure Survey Data to 24-Hour Dietary Recall Data in Estimating Food Intake and Dietary Adequacy in Kasungu District in Malawi.
Locally acronymed EFIDAS (Estimating Food Intake and Dietary Adequacy Study), LUANAR will collaborate with JSI Research and Training Institute, Inc., London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and University of Nottingham to determine if estimates of dietary intake and adequacy using household expenditure consumption surveys (HCES) data are similar to estimates of dietary intake and adequacy using the quantitative open individual 24-hour dietary recall among women of reproductive age (20–45 years) in Kasungu district in central Malawi.
The study will be concluded by 31st August 2023. Therefore, LUANAR seeks to recruit a Research Assistant to facilitate attainment of the EFIDAS objectives.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reporting to the Co-Investigator of the study, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following core duties and responsibilities among others:
a. Support Malawian study team members in managing all levels of study implementation (ethics application through publication).
b. Manage communications and schedules for the Malawian study team members.
c. Provide support in data retrieval and other analytical processes.
d. Manage timesheets for the Malawian team.
e. Take meeting minutes and produce timely records of deliberation on the Malawi side and plan actions in liaison with relevant personnel.
f. Participate in data analysis and drafting of scientific reports for presentation and manuscript(s) for publication.
QUALIFICATIONS AND CORE COMPETENCIES:
a. A Malawian with a BSc degree in Nutrition or related field attained from a university of repute within the last 5 years plus a minimum of 3 years relevant experience.
b. Sufficiently knowledgeable and experienced in dietary assessment methodologies including HCES and 24-hour dietary recall.
c. Background and competence in quantitative research methodologies.
d. Demonstrable knowledge of human nutrition research ethics application processes.
e. Background, interest and competence in various statistical analysis techniques and interpretation.
f. Ability to work with large datasets in various statistical software such as R, Stata, and IBM SPSS Statistics.
g. Ability to coordinate project activities across diverse groups of people and cultures.
h. A dependable, productive, well-organized creative thinker of sound character who is detail-oriented.
i. Ability to work independently with minimal or no supervision, and as part of a large research team.
j. Ability to write timely activity and scientific reports.
k. Sufficient working knowledge of the English language.
CONDITIONS OF ENGAGEMENT
This is a SIX months full-time contractual employment (March- August 2023) with no possibility of extension whatsoever after the life of the Activity at the end of August 2023.
The Research Assistant will be subject to LUANAR conditions of service for staff on projects/contracts. He/she will therefore be appropriately remunerated in line with applicable LUANAR guidelines and conditions of engagement.
