Unlocking Talent Education Specialist

VSO is an innovative international development organisation that contributes towards addressing poverty and disadvantage through the placement of International and National skilled professional volunteers with national partners. VSO is currently implementing the Unlocking Talent Project in various primary schools in Malawi. The
projects uses tablet technology to improve core competencies of reading, writing and mathematics for Standard 1 and 2 (early grade) primary school children. This is an initiative that will among other things provide real time data to teachers and school administrators on learner’s progress. VSO Malawi therefore is looking for Volunteer Education Specialists to based in Various districts across Malawi who will be able to train and support the teachers and school administrators to be able to mainstream this new approach into their teaching as well as the overall school activities.

Role Overview
The volunteer role will work closely with the staff at the Teacher Training College (TTC) in developing capacity for TTC lecturers, PEAs, teachers, school committees in DET and other aspects of the project as required. It will also work with education personnel at the district office specifically the Primary Education Advisors (PEAs), teachers and school
committees. (She)He will also participate in the development of training module/manual for trainer of trainers and teachers focusing on Digital Education Technology (DET), how children learn and use of data for decision making to improve learning outcomes. In addition, they will also support districts and schools in implementation of project
activities.

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Those with more advanced qualifications will have an added advantage.
  • Strong experience in training and mentoring of primary school teachers both in-service and student teachers.
  • Knowledge and experience in primary school teaching and/or early grade learners especially literacy, numeracy and English as an additional language.
  • Experience in training of trainers (teacher trainers and primary education advisors/inspectors)
  • Knowledge and experience in strategies for educational leadership, school effectiveness and improvement and integration of new/innovative approaches to improve learning outcomes
  • Self-starter: able to identify relevant contacts and quickly determine own work plan
  • Computer literate.
  • Knowledge and experience of how children learn and how to apply that to improvement of learning outcomes.
  • Experience of developing training modules Experience and interest in use of digital education technology plus a general knowledge of tablet technology.
  • Knowledge and experience in general capacity building, training and facilitation.
  • Knowledge and experience in monitoring and evaluation.
  • Knowledge and experience in financial management, arranging capacity building activities.
  • You will be required to bring your own laptop as VSO is unable to provide computers to volunteers for this project.
  • Must have a clean driver’s license for motorcycles and those who do not have must be willing to learn.
