The University of Malawi (UNIMA) was established after the 2019 Acts of Parliament which created three Universities from delinked Colleges of the former University with the same name. The University of Malawi retains the cherished history of being the fest University in the county, a champion of intellectual freedom and academic rigour and boasts of the largest group of alumni in top leadership positions within Malawi and beyond.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor will work with the Vice-Chancellor to lead the University in academic and research excellence, pursuit of knowledge and truth, and the development of transferable skill required to address local, national and global development needs, The Deputy Vice-Chancellor shall be under the immediate supervision of the Vice-Chancellor and shall deputise the Vice-Chancellor in all aspects. The successful applicant will possess doctorate from an accredited or recognized univesty by the National Council for Higher Education and must have demonstrable leadership and management experience in a senior management role an academic institution. This is a demanding, but rewarding position suited to a highly motivated, soliton focused and astute strategic leader

Deputy Vice-Chancellors Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership and Management
• Deputy Vice-Chancellor shall provide strategic leadership and management in academic, research, outreach, consulting and library services.
• The DVC will provide leadership in all aspects of strategic planning cycle
• Coordinating the development and implementation of academic plans
• Safeguard utilization of University resources;
• Enforce compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements
• Chair relevant University Committees as provided by legislation, Council or as assigned by the Vice-Chancellor;
• Provide regular reports and updates to the VC on key deliverables in implementing the University’s strategy;
• Supervise senior management teams in delivering strategic objectives of the University.

Academic Affairs Management
• Provide academic and administrative oversight for Schools of the University and service units which support the academic mission of the University;
• Establish and direct the academic agenda of the University;
• Provide leadership for the University’s planning process and take a leadership role with respect to academic matters in the University;
• Conduct performance reviews of Executive Deans, the Librarian and other academic posts;
• Promote innovation in teaching and learning to ensure a rich student-centered environment across and beyond the University;
• Oversee the recruitment process in order to hire qualified personnel for the delivery of the mandate of the University;
• Oversee and work collaboratively with Executive Deans to develop academic programmes that respond to local, regional and global needs;
• In consultation with Executive Deans, ensure that Schools and the wider University have international standard facilities for teaching and learning, and widening access to quality higher education;
• Facilitate community/civic and industry engagement, including development of partnership with business and industry as well all other institutions.

Resource Mobilization, Entrepreneurship and Innovation
• Establish and manage partnership with government, the public and private sectors, development partners and international community related to academic affairs;
• Develop marketing and outreach strategies for the teaching and research agenda which should be aligned to the University’s Strategic Plan;
• Represent the University on external bodies for academic matters;
• Mobilise resources for academic affairs.

Internationalisation and Networking
• Communicate institutional strategy and priorities to internal and external stakeholders;
• Develop and implement a strategy for internationalization including a strategy for improving the University’s global and regional rankings;
• Facilitate networking and international collaboration and partnerships across the University.

• A minimum of PhD or equivalent qualification from an institution accredited or recognised under the National Council of Higher Education Act;
• At least 10 years’ experience in a senior management position in an academic institution;
• Deep knowledge of the development, implementation, and assessment of academic programmes at both the undergraduate and post graduate levels.
• Demonstrable strong leadership, team-building and management skills.
• Experience of setting up structures and systems to improve academic, research, and enterprise activities within a higher education institution,
• Experience in budget management and financial reporting.

• Entrepreneurial: experience of developing business models, achieving a good balance between risks and success
• Lead change: capable of leading and overseeing the development of structures, systems, processes and procedures of the university
• Impactful: astuteness, able to get buy-in from the University community and other stakeholders; balances stakeholders’ priorities with a focus on delivering results
• Adaptability: able to balance the short-term and long-term perspectives; identifies early signals and adapts proactively.
• Reliability: consistently delivering and following through on agreed commitments;
• Effective communication: clearly communicates, balances soft skills and decisiveness; effective ambassador of the University.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor shall be appointed for a term of five years. Subject to satisfactory performance, he/she may be eligible for re-appointment for one further term.
For serving tenured employees of the University who are appointed to the position in accordance with the Act and statues of the University, they shall be appointed on secondment basis.
