UNICEF Malawi Country Programme (2019-2023) is aligned with the Government of Malawi’s Growth and Development Strategy (MDGS III) and the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF). The programme supports the Government of Malawi to meet its commitment to respect, protect and fulfil children’s rights in line with international conventions and standards. The country programme is guided by the principles of children’s rights, equity, gender equality, inclusion and resilience, and supports evidence-based, integrative and innovative programming. The vision is that ‘all girls and boys in Malawi, especially the most disadvantaged and deprived, realize their rights’.  The programme focuses on: early childhood (parenting, high-impact social services, early stimulation and learning), middle childhood and adolescence (learning, multi-sectoral services, active citizenship), communities (decentralized services and systems, community ownership, social norms), programme effectiveness (monitoring, evaluation, HACT, Innovation, Social Protection and Social Policy and External Communication.  The programme is based on ‘leaving no child behind’, realizing ‘rights for all children in Malawi’.

  The WASH Programme in Malawi aims at supporting climate resilient water and sanitation services for children and women through innovative solutions and strategic partnerships  and as WASH Specialist, you will be at the forefront of the implementation of related activities in both rural and urban contexts.

The Malawi Country Office offers an exciting and rewarding career opportunity for you to join our dynamic WASH team where you will be responsible for the implementation of innovative water and sanitation activities and provide strategic support for humanitarian and resilience building interventions. In your role, you will report to the and be under the overall guidance and supervision of the WASH Section Chief.

  1. Lead the implementation of climate resilient programming, including contracts management, field activities monitoring, dialogue with counterparts and relevant stakeholders
  2. Drive the climate financing agenda and the uptake of the WASH financing strategy under development
  3. Lead engagement in strategic partnerships with International Financing Institutions and private sector
  4. Lead the humanitarian and resilience building activities in both rural and urban settings

To qualify as a champion for every child you will have…

  Education :

  • An advanced university degree in one of the following fields is required: engineering, public health, social sciences, sanitary engineering or another relevant technical field is required
  • Additional relevant post-graduate courses that complement/supplement the main degree is a strong asset
  • *A first-level university degree in a relevant field combined with two additional years of professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree


  • A minimum of five years of professional experience in WASH-related programmes for developing countries is required
  • Experience working in a developing country is considered as a strong asset
  • Experience working in complex humanitarian interventions is considered as a strong asset
  • Experience in climate resilient WASH, including familiarity with climate financing is considered an asset
  • Experience in urban sanitation is considered an asset
  • Experience on Climate Resilient WASH approaches is required

Language :

  • Fluency in English – both written and verbal skills is required

  Technical Competencies and Knowledge

  • Understanding of climate financing mechanisms is required
  • Knowledge of Urban sanitation business models for low- and middle-income countries, including sustainability is required
  • Solid conceptual understanding of national government WASH policies, plans and strategies is required
  • Strong analytical skills relating to the analysis of national budgets and expenditure for basic WASH, and related advocacy is required
