The Opportunity

Save the Children is inviting applications from suitably qualified personnel to fill the position of  Technical Coordinator – Child and Youth Participation  (1 position) under PDQ department. The role holder will coordinate and facilitate the implementation of child participation and youth-led campaign in an innovation to raise young change-makers in advocacy campaigns, through global shift movement (shifting power from adults to young people), within Abwenzi A Ana (AAA) as well as SIDA funded CSO strengthening programs. The post holder will also use their contextual understanding, technical expertise, and relationship building skills to support the quality design and delivery of Save the Children’s child rights programming with meaningful child participation within the ongoing country program strategy.

‘Shift’ is a campaign accelerator designed by Save the Children to support young activists (aged 15-25 years) to design and deliver public campaigns for social or environmental change. Shift uses a co-creation methodology designed through consultation with young people themselves – providing the necessary tools, networks, resources and skills required to effectively mobilise audiences on issues that matter most to them. Through this process, Shift builds the confidence and skills of young activists. Shift has adopted an experiential model, with a focus on learning while doing. A seed funding mechanism is used to support Shift campaigners step beyond campaign designing and theory to also ably implement their ideas and plans. Shift also focuses on utilising  emerging digital platforms  to support young people safely express their views and mobilise audiences within the global movement.

With technical support from the in-country Senior Technical Adviser for Child protection and Child rights governance as well as the global SCI shift creative team, the post holder will steer the implementation and effective delivery of (i) the youth-led campaign while utilising the Shift campaign cycle and (ii) ‘meaningful child participation’ in the two programs, with practical utilisation of the minimum requirements of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UN CRC) including;

    • Rolling out children’s parliament in Ntcheu
    • Rolling out child led social accountability
    • Girls empowerment especially building self-defence skills against sexual abuse and violence
    • Supporting implementation partners to monitor child rights while utilising the UN instruments/protocols as well as the African Charter

 

The post holder will mainly be responsible for planning, implementation, monitoring and reporting of child participation interventions as such, will work closely with program operations team for AAA in Ntcheu and SIDA funded CSO strengthening program at national level

In order to be successful you will bring/have:

  • Bachelor’s degree level in social sciences, sociology, social work, or relevant field
  • At least four years’ experience in a related field.
  • Practical skills in facilitating youth-led campaigns through both face to face and utilisation of digital platforms
  • A very good understanding and demonstrable skills in operationalising child participation as well as effective delivery of child rights programming
  • Demonstrable skills in conducting child rights advocacy and social accountability of duty bearers
  • Strong child rights and child protection background and experience, with demonstrable skills in implementing interventions with a child protection ‘systems strengthening’ approach
  • Wide experience with demonstrable skills in conducting child protection case management, child rights monitoring and reporting and facilitating meaningful child participation
  • Demonstrable skills in managing and monitoring seed funding for child-led or youth-led campaign initiatives without prejudice and manipulation
  • Skilled at networking, representation and partnership development in order to promote learning
  • Wide experience in collaborating with government departments and key child protection and child rights structures both formal and informal
  • Capacity and willingness to be extremely flexible and accommodating in difficult and hardworking circumstances.
  • Ability to write clear project reports (both narrative and financial) as well as updates
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken, with good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate at all levels
