An exciting project based in Malawi has created a new role to work for Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine at the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Research Programme in Blantyre, Malawi.

This role will form part of a National Institute research (NIHR) funded project and you will be focused on developing and implementing interventions to prevent healthcare associated infection (HAI) and associated antimicrobial resistance.

The aim for the role is to support a programme of work in developing effective, acceptable and scalable interventions to reduce HAI in Africa.

You will evaluate current Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) practice in hospitals in Southern Malawi and explore whether and how the WHO framework for IPC implementation can be used, how it may be adapted to the Malawian setting and any barriers / enablers there are to its application.

Main duties of this role are:

Recruit, train and support a team of IPC nurses who will devise and implement multimodal improvement strategies to improve Infection Prevention and Control practice

  • Collaborate with stakeholder groups across the Ministry of Health, Malawi to adapt the WHO IPC framework
  • Fully engage with an interdisciplinary research group that will investigate the challenge of IC implementation from multiple perspectives, including clinical microbiologists, statistical modellers and health economists.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to register for a PhD as part of this role if desired.
