The HEPU in the School of Public Health and Family Medicine, Department of Health Systems and Policy at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences has secured an Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) grant through the Health Services Joint Fund to implement a health economics, policy and ethics capacity support programme. HEPU is a joint KUHES, MOH and University of York initiative and has very strong collaboration with other leading international universities and research institutes as well as the East, Central and Southern Africa (ECSA) Health Community. Through the Thanzi la Onse Project, HEPU and collaborating Partners have built a strong foundation on which health economics, policy and ethics research capacity is to be strengthened. The FCDO grant through the HSJF aims to sustain and strengthen further the capacity already being developed at HEPU.

Applications are therefore being invited from suitably qualified candidates to fill the following vacant post:

Associate Research Fellow – Policy , Ethics and Governance (1 position – Blantyre)

Job Summary

Reporting to the Postdoc, the Associate Research Fellow will work with the Postdoc and Research fellows and be responsible for conducting literature review, data analysis, drafting reports and other articles.

The successful candidate will be offered a 2-year contract with initial 6 months as probation period, subject to renewal upon satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with PI and Scientific Administrator to support in project design and planning
  • Support project team in implementation of project activities
  • Assist in monitoring of project progress and handle issues that arise.
  • Participating in Think Tank, Policy Lab and other meetings and assisting in taking notes and supporting in report writing
  • Assist in policy analysis and project research activities including literature review, data collection, data analysis, documentation and presentation of findings
  • Assist in preparation of other articles including project newsletters, updating social media pages and blogging about HEPU project activities
  • Assisting in proposal writing, protocol development and submission.
  • Assisting in manuscript writing and submission
  • Assisting in maintaining of comprehensive project documentation, plans and reports
  • Any other duties assigned

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Social Science with credit or above in project administration/project management, health management, Ethics, Governance, or any related field
  • 2 years proven work experience as research associate.
  • Ability to prepare schedules and step by step action plans
  • Demonstrate experience in data collection and data analysis
  • Strong interpersonal and team work abilities
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Word MS excel and other relevant computer packages
  • Experience of working in an academic institution and knowledge of Malawi health strategies and policies will be an added advantage
  • Training in Ethics will also be an added advantage.
  • Publication will also be an added advantage
