About the job

Job Introduction

The Government of Malawi is embarking on an ambitious agenda to transform the heavily agriculture-dependent economy away from a reliance on tobacco in order to develop an economy that can create jobs at scale and add value in country. Around 85 percent of Malawi’s population is estimated to live in rural areas and rely on rainfed agriculture for employment. Nine-tenths of rural households engage in subsistence farming, cultivating small and fragmented land held under uncertain customary tenure. As such the agro-led industrialisation of the economy is critical.

Strengthening the agriculture sector to allow for structured markets, for agro-industry and for small holder farmers and agribusinesses to prosper is essential. The intent is to develop robust value chains which can raise value addition, create jobs, improve net exports and significantly improve farmer incomes.
