Job Purpose

To lead the Tax Accounting, Reporting and Analysis Function in providing comprehensive tax accounting, tax reporting and analysis service for Standard Bank Malawi which includes; ensuring Compliance with the tax requirements, Management of the bank’s taxation affairs, Advising the bank with regards to tax affairs, Monitoring and control function of the balance sheet substantiation process

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities

  • Delivering a full range of tax services in compliance with laws and regulations within timeframe
  • Building relationships and interacting with clients to provide excellent planning, consulting and expertise
  • Providing innovative tax planning and reviewing complex income tax returns
  • Remit statutory payments (PAYE, VAT, WHT) and obtain receipts and certificates.
  • Manage compliance by the Group with tax laws and all tax aspects including transfer pricing, withholding taxes, indirect taxes, PAYE, and tax planning.
  • Identification and evaluation of taxation risks within the Group
  • Advises the bank with regards to “Best Practices” in Taxation.
  • Implementation of systems and processes to mitigate identified taxation risks.
  • Preparation of monthly and annual taxation computations and returns.
  • Review monthly deferred taxation calculations/ reconciliations.
  • New and existing product evaluation to determine taxation impact.
  • Custodian of the Groups transfer pricing policy, responsible for ensuring that policy is up to date and appropriate agreements and approvals are in place to ensure compliance.
  • Optimisation of the Group’s taxation expense, by identifying areas of tax savings.
  • Manage the relationship and participate in selection of external taxation consultants serving the Group.
  • Improve taxation knowledge within the Group through communication and tax training where appropriate.
  • Promote the balance sheet substantiation activity in the Group.
  • Provide assurance that reconciliations (and substantiations thereof) are prepared monthly by performing the following:
  • Identify on a sample/rotation basis reconciliation for review and review the reconciliations or any control process that support the substantiation.
  • Contact the reconciler/reviewer to follow up on any reconciliations not received by a set time after month end; and
  • Perform a review of the documentation that has supported account sign-off
  • Implement a process for the handover of accounts. This could be due to staff rotation or accounts moved to other business units.
  • Ensure any transfer of account ownership is agreed by both parties before the transfer is made. The new owner(s) must be able to comply with the policy before accepting ownership.
  • Promote the balance sheet substantiation activity in the Group.

  • Develop and implement the People plan and identify current and potential employee skill requirements within the Tax Accounting and Reporting Function with support from People & Culture and drive the development of people within the team.
  • Lead the Tax Accounting and Reporting team through employee engagement principles, including employee lifecycle from recruitment through to exit, performance management, training and development, discipline and grievance management, retention and reward and people administration, to ensure a high performance culture within the Tax Accounting and Reporting Function.

Minimum Qualification and Experience

  • First Degree in Finance and Accounting is a minimum requirement for this role.
  • Chartered Accountant qualification and Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) certification would be required
  • Proven work experience as a Tax Manager
  • Excellent knowledge of  tax accounting, tax compliance and all types of tax returns
  • Knowledge of tax software and MS Office
  • Good at meeting deadlines and solving problems
  • Exceptional client service along with the ability to develop excellent client relationships
